Hi, a very interesting read. Just want to clarify when you say "foreign" essentially the focus is patents by non-residents. What about the foreign firms' affiliate filling as residents? Is there any evidence to support that these affiliates are also discriminated against? Thanks, ruchi
Hi Ruchi, thanks for your comment and this very relevant question! In short, the papers I have read use the applicant's country of residence (as listed on the patent document) to define foreign status. So a foreign firm's affiliate filing as a resident would be counted as domestic. I am not aware of a paper that has considered the applicant's ownership structure, but that would be a very valuable exercise!
