Introducing The Patentist SEP Edition
The Patentist SEP Edition is a shorter, more specialized stream for readers interested in standard-essential patents (SEPs), FRAND licensing, patent pools, litigation, and the economics of technology standards. It will cover relevant reports, academic papers, and, occasionally, court decisions and other major developments. Always with an economic angle.
SEPs are among the most active areas in today’s patent landscape. They underpin many technology standards, are the subject of intense litigation, and increasingly sit at the center of geopolitical tensions, with local courts sometimes issuing decisions that have worldwide effects. My recent series on standard-essential patents, available here and here, also received considerable interest, suggesting that some readers of The Patentist would welcome more focused coverage of the topic.
For these reasons, I have decided to create an SEP edition of The Patentist. The briefs will be shorter than regular Patentist posts and will usually focus on one item: a report, an academic paper, a court decision, or another development worth discussing. The first brief has just been published and discusses WIPO’s recent report on SEP valuation.
To avoid crowding your mailbox, subscribers to The Patentist will not automatically receive email notifications for the SEP Edition.
If you would like to receive The Patentist SEP Edition, you can subscribe to the section manually:
Go to The Patentist on Substack.
Open your subscription settings / “Manage subscription.”
In the notifications section, switch on The Patentist SEP Edition.
If SEPs, FRAND, patent pools, and the economics of standards are your thing, I hope you will join me there.
